Norton Internet Security and Personal Firewall programs are designed to protect your computer from malicious programs and network intrusions. However, there are many applications (e.g., Windows Messenger) that run into problems accessing the network when they are both running. These security programs can also interfere with web-browser applications and cause display errors. As the supervisor, you can turn them off for a little while anytime you want without damaging system components.

Step 1
Start Norton Internet Security and click "User accounts" to see what Norton account is active. If you are not signed on as a supervisor, click "Log off" and select "Yes" to confirm and close the current account.
Step 2
Click "Log on" and select "supervisor" on the account name list. Type the supervisor password. If you did not set the account with a password, leave the password space blank. Click "OK" to log into the account.
Step 3
Click "Status and settings" and choose "Security." Click "Turn off" to disable Norton Internet Security. Move to the next step to turn off the Norton Personal Firewall.
Step 4
Start Norton Personal Firewall and click the "Status and settings" button. Click "Security" and choose "Turn off" to disable the Norton Personal Firewall.
